“The Bible doesn’t really say anything about money.”
You have heard this claim before. It is not true.
Debt and fear can make your finances feel like a losing chess match. It can feel like checkmate. But the Bible speaks directly into that moment.
The Bible talks about money often. It talks about debt. It talks about wealth. It talks about God’s provision for you.
This article shows what Scripture actually says.
Debt in the Bible
The Bible does not call debt a sin. The Bible calls debt a risk.
Proverbs 22:7 says: “Just as the rich rule the poor, so the borrower is servant to the lender.” (NLT)
This verse gives a warning. Debt can put you under someone else’s control.
Romans 13:8 says: “Owe nothing to anyone—except for your obligation to love one another.” (NLT)
This verse does not forbid all debt. It tells you not to make debt a normal part of your life.
Proverbs 22:26-27 gives more advice. Do not guarantee another person’s debt. If you cannot pay that debt, you may lose your own bed. (NLT)
Wealth in the Bible
The Bible talks about wealth often. It also uses many related words for the same idea: money, riches, and resources.

Together, these words appear over 940 times in the NLT. Some verses use more than one of these words. So this total counts word matches, not unique verses.
The Bible does not avoid the topic of wealth. The Bible speaks about wealth often, in many forms.
Proverbs 13:22 says: “Good people leave an inheritance to their grandchildren, but the sinner’s wealth passes to the godly.” (NLT)
Ecclesiastes 5:19 says: “And it is a good thing to receive wealth from God and the good health to enjoy it.” (NLT)
1 Chronicles 29:12 says: “Wealth and honor come from you alone, for you rule over everything.” (NLT)
These verses show wealth as a gift. God gives wealth. God also asks you to use wealth with wisdom.
God wants abundance for you
The Bible teaches that God wants a full life for you. This is not a promise of instant riches. It is a promise of provision and purpose.
John 10:10 says: “The thief’s purpose is to steal and kill and destroy. My purpose is to give them a rich and satisfying life.” (NLT)
This verse names two purposes. One purpose steals from you. The other purpose gives to you. Jesus states His purpose is to give you a rich and satisfying life.
God’s provision for you
Philippians 4:19 says: “And this same God who takes care of me will supply all your needs from his glorious riches, which have been given to us in Christ Jesus.” (NLT)
Matthew 6:33 says: “Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need.” (NLT)
Psalm 37:25 says: “Once I was young, and now I am old. Yet I have never seen the godly abandoned or their children begging for bread.” (NLT)
These verses show a pattern. God provides for His people over time.
Provision and wisdom together
The Bible connects two ideas. God provides. You act with wisdom.
Proverbs 21:20 says: “The wise have wealth and luxury, but fools spend whatever they get.” (NLT)
Proverbs 3:9-10 says: “Honor the LORD with your wealth and with the best part of everything you produce. Then he will fill your barns with grain, and your vats will overflow with good wine.” (NLT)
Malachi 3:10 says: “Bring all the tithes into the storehouse so there will be enough food in my Temple… Try it! Put me to the test!” (NLT)
2 Corinthians 9:8 says: “And God will generously provide all you need. Then you will always have everything you need and plenty left over to share with others.” (NLT)
This verse states a purpose for provision. God gives you enough. God also gives you extra, so you can help other people.
Money is not the problem
Some people misquote 1 Timothy 6:10. They say it states “money is the root of all evil.” The actual verse is different.
1 Timothy 6:10 says: “For the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil. And some people, craving money, have wandered from the true faith and pierced themselves with many sorrows.” (NLT)
Money is not the problem. The love of money is the problem.
Deuteronomy 8:18 says: “Remember the LORD your God. He is the one who gives you power to be successful, in order to fulfill the covenant he confirmed to your ancestors with an oath.” (NLT)
This verse credits God for your success. It asks you to remember God. It does not ask you to forget Him.
Summary
